It is crucial to think about this topic, especially since so many people today aspire to be entrepreneurs. I used to believe that all entrepreneurs make startups. Haven't asked this question to myself yet, even though i wanted to start something of my own eventually.

My father recently supported me in a conversation about starting my own business. It was a proud moment for me, as I have never seen him as an entrepreneurial type. He has always been a flag bearer of government jobs, but now he seems to think otherwise.

I do think your arch nemesis will be worried after seeing this blog 😆, GG! Something I was laughing out loud was when you said, "Nowadays, parents and neighbours are okay with their kids doing a startup!" I don't know if you meant it that way, but the sarcasm and observation were on point.

hehe

Parents who championed government jobs changing their mind is beautiful. As Bob Dylan said, times they are changing.

"The word startup has its origin in 1510. Startups were essentially a kind of half boots."

Now it makes sense why startups have the term bootstrapping (Looked it up, doesn't really have much connection, but I now get why creating misinformation is fun)

A very relevant thing to discuss in today's day and age where we have a lot of people in our country and don't have enough jobs for them; a JTBD for people in power. The ratio of govt jobs : people who are applying for them is an irrational number (excuse my math). Same with private sector. Linkedin is flooded with application which makes 'the already hectic life of an HR' even more hectic. They now have to not reply to 300 people instead of 30 people. A straight forward solution to solve the job crisis seems to be 'teaching people how to fish' and thus startup India.

"When we get a glimpse of what they there are creating. When we get to see people of our age getting to be part of that magic. That’s a sadness we can’t discount." Can't agree more on this. This experimentation towards problem solving and progressing humanity (in capitalistic means but still) is the innovation culture and this was supposed to be the rant of Mr Minister which backfired because of the delivery (so I believe).

Post independence, when India was looking for developing and catching up with the rest of the world, government used to either fund bright minds to go study abroad to then come back change things in India or invited experts (Indian and others) to come to India and make change. This support from government did wonders for India. Two notable examples would be Dr. Verghese Kurien and Dr. Janaki Ammal.

Here is an excerpt about Chinese policy on the same. "Young Thousand Talents (YTT) programme. The scheme was established in 2010 to recruit and nurture early-career expatriate scientists who return to China after receiving PhDs abroad.

Scientists aged 40 and under were induced by YTT to return home if they were offered better funding and larger research teams to support their work, according to the study." But apparently the top talent is remaining in the US because of socio political conditions.

Its imperative that the govt of India creates a better 'condition' in the country to do innovation along with policy interventions for improving the act of innovation. I feel its mostly a factor of social perception (mental model of risk reduction; all we did were trading and not innovation).

As always a fantastic selection of topic. Looking forward for more interesting ones.

Love this!

“It’s imperative that the govt of India creates a better 'condition' in the country to do innovation along with policy interventions for improving the act of innovation.” - THIS!

Yeah, the ease of doing business and the ease of doing experiments need to improve

P.S: The bootstrap relation seemed so obvious! Right?

Even I thought the tech and startup world had a clear obsession with footwear…but sadly no.

And thanks so much 😅
